I am extremely Disappointed when blog networks turn down my blog because my content is not considered "high quality" or because it contains "mature material". First of all, I am not a pornography pusher. There may be images that contain nudity, but otherwise I do not write about nor do I have any material on my blog that is particularly more mature than any other blog in the blogsphere (stupid word, btw). Since when are children reading blogs about SEO or freelance copywriting? Why are these blogs not considered mature? The truth is that if a person under 18 came to my blog they wouldn't see anything they haven't seen on television or on the internet before, and the written content would bore them to tears. I also don't know how they'd find my blog. The keywords aren't the sort of terms that would get a child to my blog, and if a good parent has their internet filters on then their child won't be able to view my site anyhow. So, why am I being denied access to traffic, advertisers and opportunities that other blogger have?
I think I know why. I believe it is because there are far too many people in North America that control the internet that are afraid of nudity (possibly right-wing religious freaks, maybe, I don't know...) These same people equate nudity with sex and pornography. These are the same people that think I am a pornographer.
It's alright, I do this for fun. I am a scientist that is almost finished her doctorate. I write for another blog and will starting a third shortly. This how I keep my writing chops in shape while I try to pound out manuscripts for my research and finish a few other writing projects this year. I am only frustrated because even though I get good traffic and write decent content, I am considered "poor quality". My content may not always fall into one niche, but it is interesting, only contains a few grammatical errors and in some people's opinion, is "high quality". My images are mature, but so are the graphic images of war and starvation in Time Magazine. My images are found in art galleries and have been discussed in many forums as highly collectible and as valuable pieces of American Art. I may not be in good taste depending on your opinion, but isn't that what art is? Images that provoke discussion, emotion and thought.
