That makes me want to puke - it's soooo sad. Where I live the population is merely 75,000! That means that 56% of my town relies on the United Way. I know that I live below the poverty level. I live off a small government grant to go to school and I pay tuition from that and then live off the rest. The take-home amount is less than $20,000 a year. What is crazy is that I cannot receive money from the United way. BUT, they will ask me for money every year during their funding drive. Actually, no university student can receive united way money or food bank food, even though most of us are tragically poor - AND they all expect us to give to them. What I can't figure out is who the heck has money to give in my town? How much money do the other 44% of people have? Are they mega rich? OR (and I am guessing this is much more likely) are most of them barely scraping by and then only a few people mega rich?I hope that this statistic changes soon or this city will crumble.
