I have always grown up with the opinion that Unions keep the me, the laborer, the worker, protected from the employer who has it in their best interest to make money. Because the employer has in their best interest to make money, they are usually never thinking about your best interest. I believe the union can negotiate on your behalf - and with the power of all the workers behind the Union, it will have the strength to bargain for your best interests.
I do understand that occasionally other people are affected by Union strikes, but I don't understand how anyone could be so selfish that they think because they have been affected by it that the Union is selfish. A Union by definition is working on behalf of others and cannot be selfish - it has nothing to gain.
The next time a Union has inconvenienced you, and you get upset about it, stop and think about what they are trying to achieve. Put yourself in the shoes of the people who need to fight to get something they need. Then you might understand why Unions are important to some people.
Let me know what you think about Unions.
