It's on all of our minds...

Will Britney Discuss the Recession on Sunday Night?

Do you think she and her two little boys have been hit hard?

Is it harder for her to pay palimony, child support and maintain her jet-set lifestyle when interest rates are soaring?

How are her album sales?

The drop in Gas Prices must make fueling her private jet easier - right?

Can she buy more slutty clothes now that everything at the dollar is even cheaper (I mean that's what happens when your dollar falls, right?)

OMFG - I can't imagine what it is like to be Britney, but I'll bet its bitchin' hard during a recession.

Leaded Crystal - think twice for your health

Two things that go together in the holidays - drinking beverages like wine, juice and pop and drinking them from fancy leaded crystal. We always bring out our fancy dishes when guests come over and we definitely drink the fun bubbly drinks! I'll bet it has never occurred to you that you could be drinking something poisonous?

My friend sent me this the other day, and of course because I am a toxicologist by trade it was of great interest to me. I believe that everyone - especially parents with young kids, should think twice before serving drinks from crystal this holiday season.

This is a cautionary tale regarding the use leaded crystal wine glasses or decanters.

An NWRC employee received a set of leaded crystal wine glasses as a gift, and asked me if it was safe to drink wine from these glasses. Leaded crystal glassware contains >25% lead (Pb) by weight. I suggested an experiment: put equal volumes of wine in the glasses for various periods of time, bring the samples in to NWRC, and we'd measure the lead concentrations. The results: white wine directly out of the bottle had almost undetectable amounts of lead (<0.01 ppm), but within 1/2 hour in a leaded crystal wineglass, the lead concentration had risen to about 0.6 ppm, and within 24 hr, it was 3.4 ppm. Consuming a single 200 ml serving of wine containing 0.6 ppm Pb would result in a Pb intake of 120 ug Pb. If you had one glass of such wine per day, you'd consume about 840 ug Pb per week from this source alone, roughly 5-times the average total weekly dietary Pb intake for Canadians as estimated by HC in the 1990s (168 ug). If you were to keep port, brandy, whiskey, etc in a leaded crystal decanter for long periods of time, it would likely accumulate much higher levels of lead than the levels we measured.

I finally got around to making a styleboard

Yep, I've been meaning to for a couple of years. I figured it would be a good idea because I am about to go shopping in Montreal for a couple of days and then Shopping in Toronto, so perhaps I should nail-down some ideas of what I would like - no?

I definitely want to play on the animal prints - and I have already picked up some leopard accessories, but I don't want to go overboard when I am certain by spring they'll be quickly forgotten trend.

I really wanted to find a great jewel tone that celebrated winter, and I have decided to go with purple for this year. It also matches silvers, golds, black and grey. I have enough black, and usually avoid gold because it does bad things to my skin, so I am going to try on grey and silver this season - I think the palette looks great in the "style board" but we'll have to see how well it goes down in real-life.

I'll get back to you next week when I return from my mini-shopping vacation!

Hello Kitty straight from Japan!

I love white, fluffy things. My cat is named toffee, but he is a mostly white cate, very fluffy and has blue eyes. It has taken me a while to link the two together ... but I also love Hello Kitty. I think because they are both white and cats, I love them both a lot. I have always loved white cats. The cats in the Cottonelle commercials. My cat. And then there is Hello Kitty!

Recently my supervisor went to Japan and he brought me back the cutest little hello kitty gifts. There was a lot of bubblegum that tasted kind of soapy (yeah, like thrills) except there was a slightly more fruity flavor. Anyhow, I love this hello kitty doll the most. I took a picture of close up and on an angle that was similar to this picture of my cat, Toffee, so that you could compare their similarity (tee-hee) and then laugh at my silliness.

Pretty soon I will write a great post about something really brilliant or post some of my art - I've just been really busy and this is honestly the best I can do right now. Hello Kitty is always a good topic, right?

What do you think of Unions?

I have always grown up with the opinion that Unions keep the me, the laborer, the worker, protected from the employer who has it in their best interest to make money. Because the employer has in their best interest to make money, they are usually never thinking about your best interest. I believe the union can negotiate on your behalf - and with the power of all the workers behind the Union, it will have the strength to bargain for your best interests.

I do understand that occasionally other people are affected by Union strikes, but I don't understand how anyone could be so selfish that they think because they have been affected by it that the Union is selfish. A Union by definition is working on behalf of others and cannot be selfish - it has nothing to gain.

The next time a Union has inconvenienced you, and you get upset about it, stop and think about what they are trying to achieve. Put yourself in the shoes of the people who need to fight to get something they need. Then you might understand why Unions are important to some people.

Let me know what you think about Unions.
